  About Peter Doyle
 

An agricultural chemist and soil scientist by background, Peter has over 25 years extensive experience in environmental matters at national, corporate and local levels. He became one of the first Chartered Environmentalists following the award of a Royal Charter to the Society for the Environment in 2004. He was also awarded Chartered Scientist status following the granting of a Royal Charter to the Science Council in 2005.

A graduate of Wye/Imperial College, London and the University of Guelph (Department of Land Resource Science)in Canada, Peter is a member of several environmental bodies including the Institute of Professional Soil Scientists, the Institution of Agricultural Engineers and the Institution of Environmental Sciences. Peter has provided independent scientific advice continually to UK government agencies, business and industry since 1976 on a wide range of environmental matters but particularly in the areas concerned with environmental policy, water and soil pollution, waste management and emergency response.

Early in his career Peter taught post-graduate courses in soil and water chemistry at both the University of Guelph and Imperial College. He reviewed all aspects of the transmission of heavy metals through the food chain for the UK Environment Department, leading ultimately to publication of a water industry code of practice. His comprehensive treatise on the chemistry of metals in soil colloquially known as the 'Doyle Report' is freely available.

Through the 1980s Peter provided independent advice to the agricultural and waste management industries as well as to private farmers throughout the UK. He also developed and delivered courses on soil structure and farm waste management for the Agricultural Training Board.

With rapid developments in environmental legislation in the 1990s Peter joined the UK Atomic Energy Authority's Environmental Safety Centre at Harwell where he developed corporate environmental policies and represented UKAEA on external bodies including on Confederation of British Industry Environment and Legislative Committees. Peter also served as a Duty Officer within the UK Chemical Emergency Centre at Harwell, providing advice to public, military and industry agencies on major chemical emergencies - including, for example, the Braer shipwreck among others. For ten years he was also managing editor of the international journal 'WASTE & ENVIRONMENT TODAY published under the auspices of the Waste Management Information Bureau on behalf of the UK Government and in support of the United Nations Environment Programme.

Peter maintains an active interest in a wide range of environmental matters and continues to provide consultancy and expert witness services to local government and industry. He has served on the governing bodies of the Cotswold Water Park and the Cotswolds Conservation Board - with responsibility for the UK's largest water park and England's largest Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty respectively.
